In 8th grade Social Studies we will be studying Unites States History.  The textbook we use is “The American Nation” by Prentice Hall, 2003 edition.   Our studies will begin with the Presidency of Thomas Jefferson and continue through Reconstruction.  Writing is stressed in this course.  Some of the writing we will do includes summarizations, essays, editorials, diaries, and letters.   Students will have access to the “Highly Effective Writing” book as well as dictionaries to assist with the writing process.  Homework is given on a regular basis and is listed on the board on Monday for the entire week.  There are times students will be required to complete at home projects.  There will be a cumulative test at the end of the year.

Grading is done using total points.  All work is to be turned in when due for full credit.  If class work or homework is 1 day late it will be worth a maximum of 70 points, 2 days late a maximum of 40 points, 3 or more days late the grade is a 0.  If you are absent when an assignment is due it will be due on return for full credit.  All absent work must be made up; students are to check the absent work folder when out to get missing assignments.

Each day you will be required to bring your pencil case with at least 4 pencils, 2 pens, and colored pencils to class along with a 2 subject notebook, folder, and 1 and 1/2 inch binder.  The color for Social Studies is purple.

Throughout the year the class will work in groups and you are expected to be cooperative while working together.  Students are expected to arrive to class on time, be prepared and respectful of all.
